How to Thrift for Daisy Jones and the Six Inspired Outfits
The new book-to-screen adaptation of Daisy Jones & The Six is nothing short of warm weather style inspiration. From crochet halter tops with knee-high boots, to double denim and paisley maxis, this cast covers ample vintage ground. The first step in thrifting niche items is curating references. Costume Designer Denise Wingate had a character outfit bible ready to go long before the director was even attached, pulling looks from various films, magazines, and vintage photos of the 70s. Here are some things to look for when sourcing your perfect 70’s look amongst vintage shops and flea markets, just like Wingate did. While these specific characters have a lot of overlapping pieces, their personal style is what differentiates them. At the end of the day if you aren’t headed to a party that has a strict dress code for historically accurate 70’s garb, then this is a good starting point to Daisy Jonesify your closet. Most of us have items that are inspired by these trends whether we know it or not. As the fads fade, the staples stay. Jumpsuits and clogs are two items that are coined as ‘70s fashion’ but are constantly being reinvented to this day. In the past couple of years, we’ve seen an increase in head scarves, crochet sets, and halter tops. I don’t think 70s influence will be going anywhere any time soon.
Wingate mentions she pulled pieces from the 1920s and 1930s because that was the vintage that was popular in the 70s. So what might be considered as the 70s to the current generation could have been vintage from another’s. We used to joke about how one-day low-rise jeans and uggs might make a comeback, I truly never thought I would live to see the day. Regardless, trends will cycle but finding pieces that represent you and your individuality will create a lasting wardrobe. A little dose of main character energy might just help you emulate the perfect main character wardrobe.
